about

Kapil Seshasayee returns with the second single from his upcoming concept LP about Bollywood and the second in a "Desifuturist trilogy of albums" following on from a concept album about the Indian caste system called "A Sacred Bore".

“The Gharial” (set for release Friday, May 22, 2020) is a scathing critique of Bollywood profiteering off of nationalism at a time of great political unrest in India through the release of anachronistic period films. Releasing films which present truncated depictions of triumph in eras such as the Mughal empire serve only to escalate tensions between different factions of an audience divided by issues such as the Citizenship Amendment Act & COVID-19 epidemic in the present day. The song is named for a type of crocodile considered sacred in traditional Hindu mythology - it's no coincidence that recent hit film Tanjhaji featured a cartoonishly "evil" antagonist roasting and eating a crocodile onscreen. Such films seek not to educate or entertain, but to weaponise conflict.

lyrics

Ways
Best defined opaque
Another tenet of a speech I gave
Only ever in a bid
Do play along?
Well consider it done

I desire to move on
Redesign all my wants
Notwithstanding any perversity
Note that you are now beholden to me

Abate, the very thing you’ll become
Gauge, when at a glance I came alone

Brandish the tongs
Leatherette, Leatherette
Feasting upon it, dilate
Vessel to an islet shall be won
A vessel to an islet should be

I know better than to validate my wants

Staged, let your faith instruct
Retch to be better interrupt my thoughts
Another sign of things to come
Reconsider your tone.
